I shot up (camera, people!) the Mayo vs. Austin high school hockey game at Graham Arena in Rochester on Feb. 5. Here are a few select (read: passable, semi in focus, not terrible, etc.) shots.

Take a crappy photo and …

It’s worth a reminder: One can take a poorly executed photo of a nice scene – or in this case, a crappy cellphone-quality pic taken through the windshield of a moving car – drop it in Photoshop, play with a few artistic settings and – voila! – you have Impressionistic Art™ (I mean … I think that’s right … is it?).
This pic was all blurry and skewed from the car windshield (compare above to the original). I straightened it up, added brush strokes and now it’s suitable for framing – or as a background for my PC desktop (which it currently is). [More]
Senior picture photographer for hire

We saved the family coffers a few dollars this year by hiring an amateur to take The Middle Daughter’s™ senior pictures.
Two amateurs, actually.
Yours truly shared viewfinder duties with neighbor Colin Segovis. He did the interior shots against fancy backgrounds using balanced lighting and flash, etc., in his makeshift basement studio, erected for this particular shoot. He did a beautiful job. We’ll have to see about adding some of his work to our little gallery here.
I handled the outdoor work using my extremely high-tech flash diffuser (a piece of cardboard covered with white paper attached to my flash with a rubber band). As you can see, it was a warm and sunny fall day. I turned the flash down 1.5 to 2 stops so it filled in the shadows and little more. I brightened eyes and teeth in Photoshop – arguably a bit too much. But that’s a simple fix.
Take a look. I am now officially for hire as a senior picture photographer.
