Like the new new look?

Update – Jan. 11, 2010: Call me a malcontent, but I ran into limitations with my last theme and decided to fire it and hire yet another replacement. Since it was free, I wasn’t out a whole lot.

Like most people who operate a website or blog, I want something sharp, simple, flexible, sophisticated and easy to use. The theme I wrote about previously (below) had most of that, but I was spending too much time digging around in the code trying to get it to look and feel just like I wanted it to.

My most recent search led me to “Clean, Modern, Simple (CMS)” a theme by Curt Ziegler of Moorhead, Minn. (@cudazi on Twitter). I like it so much I opted to spend the few dollars to buy it. So far, it’s everything I wanted.

But my opinion isn’t the one that really counts. Poke around and see what you think. Then let me know. Can’t wait to hear.

Oct. 13, 2009 – So I’ve loaded and tweaked a new theme for this here blog – Magasin Quatro from Padd Solutions. I like the simple magazine style of it. I had used The Morning After theme previously, which looks really great and I like it a lot, but it just took too much effort to post new content. I’d have to choose a photo for the featured piece and create a large thumbnail, downsize the thumbnail of the previous top feature (if I hadn’t done so already, which I almost always hadn’t), change categories of both posts, and on and on.

With Magasin Quatro, I choose one photo and the system does the rest, resizing it for the various types of posts. The only downside I’ve seen so far is that the system pulls the thumbnail directly from the middle of a photo, but I’ll work with that.

The main change I made to this theme is on the individual post page. The stock layout is exactly like the homepage, with the narrow text column on the left and all the sidebar razmataz on the right. I wanted a wider text area for the post pages, without all the razmataz clutter. So I made a new content style, named it, oh-so-creatively, Content2, and connected that to the single post page. I eliminated the sidebar call, and – voila! – a clean, tidy page.

I think I really like it. What do you think?

Me likey. But why is there a link to “Cheap cigarettes” in your footer?

Thanks for the comment and the question, Derek. The link is there because either a) I believe cheap cigarettes are a god-given right and skyrocketing prices and taxes affixed to a pack of smokes penalizes those who eventually will need that money to pay outrageous medical bills, or b) I hadn’t noticed it on the theme template.
