As the hated rivals taunted the good guys with their chant of “SEE-zun-ZOH-ver” at the Rochester (Minn.) Rec Center Saturday afternoon, the clock wound down on a solid season for the Rochester Mayo High School hockey team. The top seed in Section 1AA, the Spartans came out flat and stayed that way for most of a heart-breaking 7-3 loss. The team’s seniors fell two wins short of their dream of qualifying for the state tournament next week in St. Paul.
The shot below – of senior Tom Alexander, who scored all three Mayo goals in the season-ending loss – is my favorite of the bunch, possibly of the entire season. I rendered it black and white and then brought back a splash of color around his number. I think it adds to the emotion of the image (the idea of the color – the dream? – fading to black on the back of a clearly distraught athlete). What do you think?
You can see all the shots on Picasa.
Note: You can see these and other photos from the team’s season at MN Hockey Hub, the Official Site of Minnesota High School Hockey where they’ve devoted an an entire gallery to Mayo pics. Unfortunately, they called the set Rochester Mayo vs. Austin – it includes images from five different games – and they didn’t use submitted captions (which they had requested) so you have to guess who’s who.
